Maharani of Jodhpur,Gayatri Devi 23May1919 - 29July2009

I came to know about Rajmata Gayatri Devi in my teenage as one of the beautiful Indian ladies who were internationally recognized.

I was watching the Miss Universe contest in 1994 and happily enjoying the victory of Sushmita Sen and Aishwarya Rai as the winner and first runner-up, respectively. Soon after the event some of my close friends arrived at my place and one of them told me about Gayatri Devi, calling her more beautiful than any of the beauty pageant winners.  This was the first introduction of Maharani Gayatri Devi in my life.

Gradually, I learned that Gayatri devi was born as a princess in state of Cooch Behar(now in W.B.) and got married to Maharaja Sawai Man Singh II of Jodhpur (Rajsthan). She won the Jodhpur seat in 1962 Lok Sabha elections and was also sent to jail during emergency. The royal titles and the accompanying privy purses were technically abolished through a constitutional amendment in 1971. She established the Maharani Gayatri Devi Girls School emphasising on the education of the girl child. The prestigious fashion magazine Vogue had named Gayatri Devi as one of the 10 most beautiful women in the world.

Anyone who has come in this world, has to go one day. But what remains is his/her memories, contribution to society, the way his/her life affected near and dear ones. At 90, Gayatri Devi was far more graceful and satisfied with her life. An epitome of beauty and elan has passed away…May the divine soul rest in peace.
